If you have ten days on the island, this is the route we recommend to first-time visitors more than any other. It covers the cultural triangle, the hill country, and a stretch of the south coast without a single wasted transfer.
Day 1 — Arrive in Negombo
Land at Bandaranaike (CMB) and drive 20 minutes north to Negombo rather than fighting Colombo traffic. Sleep off the flight at a beach guesthouse, eat crab curry at Lords, and be ready for a proper start in the morning.
Days 2–3 — The Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya & Dambulla)
Drive four hours inland to Sigiriya. Climb Lion Rock at 6:30 a.m. sharp — the difference between arriving at sunrise and arriving at 9 a.m. is genuinely two different rocks. Spend the afternoon at Dambulla Cave Temple and, on day 3, take a jeep into Minneriya or Kaudulla for the elephant gathering.
Days 4–5 — Kandy
Two hours south into the hills. The Temple of the Tooth at dusk, an evening cultural show, and a morning at the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. Skip the elephant orphanage — the ethical picture there is complicated.
Days 6–7 — Nuwara Eliya & the tea country
Take the morning train from Kandy to Nanu Oya (3.5 hours, book reserved second class). Tour a working tea factory — we recommend Damro Labookellie or Pedro Estate — and eat trout at Grand Indian.
Day 8 — Ella by train
The Nanu Oya → Ella leg is the famous one. Little Adam's Peak at sunset, the Nine Arch Bridge at 6:30 a.m. before the crowds, and a cold Lion Lager at Chill Café.
Days 9–10 — South coast
Drive south to Mirissa or Weligama. In whale season (Nov–Apr) do a 6 a.m. boat trip. Otherwise, learn to surf at Weligama, eat at Dewmini Roti Shop in Mirissa, and drive back to CMB via the expressway on day 10.
What to skip on a first trip
- Adam's Peak unless you're there in pilgrimage season (Dec–May) and want the 2 a.m. climb.
- Jaffna — worth it, but not on a 10-day trip.
- Colombo sightseeing — a half day is plenty; save the time for the coast.
