Mirissa, Sri Lanka
Blue whales, palm-fringed bays and the south coast
Mirissa is a crescent bay on Sri Lanka's south coast and the country's main departure point for blue whale watching. Boats leave the harbour around dawn and head to the deep water shelf offshore.
Outside the boat trip it is a relaxed beach town — a short strip of sand, headland viewpoints and easy access to Galle and the surf beaches at Weligama.
