Kandy, Sri Lanka

The last royal capital and home of the Temple of the Tooth

Kandy sits in a bowl of hills around a lake in central Sri Lanka and was the island's last independent kingdom. It is the country's cultural centre and a natural stop between the coast and the hill country.

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is the focus of any visit, best timed around one of the daily puja ceremonies when the shrine is opened.

Things to do in Kandy

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

The most important Buddhist site in Sri Lanka. Puja times are morning, midday and evening; dress modestly and remove shoes.

Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens

60 hectares of orchids, giant bamboo and a famous avenue of palms, ten minutes from the city.

Kandyan cultural show

An hour of traditional drumming, dance and fire-walking, usually in the early evening.

Kandy Lake and the Udawattakele forest

An easy walk around the lake and a shaded forest reserve directly behind the temple.

Best time to visit

Kandy is pleasant all year at around 20-28°C. December to April is driest. The Esala Perahera procession falls in July or August and is spectacular, but the city is very full — book far ahead.

How long to stay

One night is enough for the temple and a show; two if you want the botanical gardens and a slower pace.

Kandy FAQs

What time should I visit the Temple of the Tooth?
Aim for a puja ceremony — early morning or around 6.30pm — when the inner shrine is open. Allow about 90 minutes.
Is there a dress code?
Yes. Shoulders and knees covered, shoes removed at the entrance. Sarongs are available to hire at the gate.
Can I do Kandy and Sigiriya in one day?
It is possible with a private car and an early start, but it makes a long day. We usually suggest a night in each.
