Hill-country views, tea estates and the Nine Arch Bridge
Ella is a small hill-country town in Sri Lanka's Uva Province, sitting around 1,040 m above sea level between tea estates and steep forested ridges. It is the easiest place in the country to combine short walks, waterfalls and cool mountain air in a single stay.
Most travellers use Ella as a two- or three-night base: sunrise on a hill, a train ride through the tea country, and an afternoon at a waterfall. It also sits within a few hours' drive of Yala National Park, which makes a hill-country-plus-safari combination straightforward.
Things to do in Ella
Nine Arch Bridge
A colonial-era stone railway viaduct set in jungle and tea between Ella and Demodara. Train times shift, so ask your driver on the day rather than relying on printed schedules.
Little Adam's Peak
An easy 45-minute walk with the best value-for-effort view in Ella. Best in early morning before the cloud builds.
Ella Rock
A tougher 3-4 hour return hike along the railway line and through tea estates. Go early and take water.
Ravana Falls
A roadside waterfall on the Ella-Wellawaya road, at its most dramatic just after the rains.
Tea factory visit
Working factories around Ella and Demodara explain the picking, withering and rolling process and end with a tasting.
Best time to visit
January to May is the driest window in Ella. The southwest monsoon brings mist and afternoon showers from roughly June to September, which is still walkable but often cuts the views. October to December sees the heaviest rain.
How long to stay
Two nights is enough for the main sights. Three lets you add a longer hike or a slow tea-country day.
How to get to Ella
- By private car from Colombo: roughly 6-7 hours via the Southern Expressway and Wellawaya.
- By private car from Kandy: about 4-5 hours through Nuwara Eliya, one of the most scenic drives in the country.
- By train: the Kandy/Nanu Oya to Ella line is the famous hill-country journey. Many of our guests ride one leg by train while their driver meets them at the station with the luggage.
- From Yala or Tissamaharama: about 2.5-3 hours.

- How many days should I spend in Ella?
- Two nights covers Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak and a waterfall at a relaxed pace. Add a third night if you want to hike Ella Rock or spend a full day in the tea estates.
- Can I combine Ella with a Yala safari?
- Yes. Yala is about 2.5-3 hours from Ella, so a common plan is to leave Ella in the afternoon, overnight near Tissamaharama and take an early morning safari the next day. We can arrange this as one continuous private trip.
- Is the Ella train ride worth it?
- For most travellers, yes, though it is slow and often crowded. Riding one leg by train and continuing by private car is usually the best balance.
