The rock fortress at the heart of the Cultural Triangle
Sigiriya is a fifth-century royal citadel built on and around a 200 m granite outcrop in Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, for many visitors, the single most memorable half-day in the country.
The site combines water gardens, a mirror wall, the surviving frescoes and the summit palace ruins. Pairing it with the Dambulla Cave Temple, 20 minutes away, makes a full and varied day.
Things to do in Sigiriya
Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Around 1,200 steps to the summit. Allow 2.5-3 hours including the gardens, and start at opening time to avoid both crowds and heat.
Dambulla Cave Temple
Five caves of Buddha statues and painted ceilings on a hill above the main road. Shoulders and knees must be covered and shoes come off at the entrance.
Pidurangala Rock
The neighbouring outcrop, cheaper and rougher underfoot, with the best view of Sigiriya itself. Popular for sunrise.
Minneriya and Kaudulla
Elephant-gathering parks within an hour's drive, strongest in the dry months.
Best time to visit
The Cultural Triangle is driest and clearest from roughly May to September. It stays visitable year-round; December to February brings occasional heavy showers. Whatever the season, climb early in the day — the rock has almost no shade.
How long to stay
Sigiriya works as a long day trip, but one night nearby lets you climb at opening time and add Dambulla or Pidurangala without rushing.
How to get to Sigiriya
- By private car from Colombo or the airport: about 4 hours.
- By private car from Kandy: about 2.5 hours, often combined with Dambulla on the way.
- From Trincomalee or the east coast: roughly 3 hours.

- How hard is the Sigiriya climb?
- It is roughly 1,200 steps with metal staircases on the exposed section. Anyone reasonably fit can do it, but it is hot and there are few places to rest. Travellers who dislike heights sometimes prefer Pidurangala.
- Can I visit Sigiriya as a day trip?

- What should I wear?
- Light clothing and proper shoes for the rock, plus something that covers shoulders and knees for the cave temple.
