Yala, Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's best-known leopard country
Yala, in Sri Lanka's dry southeast, is the area around Yala National Park and the nearby town of Tissamaharama, where Lotus Tours is based. It is the country's most popular wildlife destination and has one of the highest leopard densities anywhere.
Almost every visit is built around a morning or afternoon jeep safari, with Tissamaharama as the practical base for accommodation, food and early departures.
Things to do in Yala
Yala National Park safari
Morning and afternoon jeep drives through scrub, lagoon and rock outcrop country. Leopard, elephant, sloth bear, crocodile and a long bird list.
Tissamaharama
The lakeside town serving the park, with the ancient Tissa dagoba and a large tank full of birdlife.
Kirinda
A rocky coastal temple ten minutes away with views along the southern shoreline.
Bundala National Park
A quieter wetland park nearby, better for flamingos and waders than for big cats.
Best time to visit
February to July is the driest stretch, when animals concentrate around waterholes and sightings are most reliable. Block 1 usually closes for maintenance around September and October — dates change each year, so confirm before booking.
How long to stay

- Private jeeps suit couples and families who want flexibility; sharing safaris are cheaper per seat. All options are on our Yala Safari page.
