Galle, Sri Lanka

A walled Dutch fort on the southern coast

Galle Fort is a walled seventeenth-century Dutch trading town on Sri Lanka's south coast, still lived in and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside the ramparts it is a grid of coral-stone houses, churches, small museums, boutiques and cafés.

It is compact enough to see on foot in an afternoon and pairs naturally with the beaches and whale-watching harbours further east.

Things to do in Galle

Fort ramparts walk

The full circuit takes about an hour; late afternoon into sunset is the best time.

Galle Lighthouse and Flag Rock

The most photographed corner of the fort, at its quietest early in the morning.

Dutch Reformed Church and maritime museum

Short, worthwhile stops that explain the fort's trading history.

Nearby beaches

Unawatuna, Dalawella and Mirissa are all within 20-45 minutes by road.

Best time to visit

December to April is the south coast's dry season with the calmest sea. May to September brings the southwest monsoon and rougher water, though Galle itself remains easy to visit.

How long to stay

Half a day inside the fort, or one night if you want the sunset and an unhurried morning.

Galle FAQs

Is Galle Fort walkable?
Yes, entirely. It is roughly 500 m across and cars are best left outside the main gate.
Can I combine Galle with whale watching?
Yes. Whale-watching boats leave Mirissa early in the morning, about 45 minutes away, so many guests do the boat trip first and Galle in the afternoon.
