Sigiriya is Sri Lanka''s most iconic monument — a mirror-polished granite plug rising 200 metres from the jungle, crowned by the remains of King Kashyapa''s sky palace. The 1,200-step climb passes the famous frescoes of the "cloud maidens" and the giant lion''s paws that guard the summit stairway. The morning starts early to beat the heat and the coach crowds. After Sigiriya you''ll cool off inside the five UNESCO-listed cave temples of Dambulla, painted with more than 150 Buddha statues and vividly restored ceiling murals.
