Sri Lanka's tea capital at 1,900 metres
Nuwara Eliya sits at about 1,900 m in the centre of Sri Lanka's tea country, where daytime temperatures rarely pass 20°C and nights are genuinely cold. Colonial-era bungalows and clipped hedges gave it the nickname 'Little England'.
It is the best place in the country to see how Ceylon tea is grown and processed, and the gateway to Horton Plains National Park.
Things to do in Nuwara Eliya
Tea estates and factory tours
Pedro, Damro and Blue Field estates all run short guided tours ending in a tasting.
Horton Plains and World's End
A 9 km loop across high plateau grassland to a sheer 870 m drop. Start before dawn — the view clouds over by 10am.
Gregory Lake
Boats, horses and a walking path in the middle of town; pleasant late afternoon.
Hakgala Botanical Garden
Terraced gardens on the Badulla road, strongest in the flowering months.
Best time to visit
February to April is the clearest and the peak local season around the April new year. Nights fall to 8-10°C year-round, so bring a warm layer whenever you come.
How long to stay
One night is enough for tea estates and the lake. Two if you want the Horton Plains pre-dawn start.
How to get to Nuwara Eliya
- By private car from Kandy: about 3 hours through the tea estates.
- By private car from Ella: about 2 hours.
- By train: the Nanu Oya station serves Nuwara Eliya and sits on the famous hill-country line.

- Do I need warm clothes?
- Yes. Evenings drop to around 8-12°C and Horton Plains at dawn is colder still.
- Is Horton Plains worth the early start?
- Only if you leave by around 5am. After mid-morning the escarpment is usually in cloud and World's End shows nothing.
